Hey 6th graders! I hear that you are reading Maniac Magee. I have not read the book and I was wondering if you recommend it. I love to read and I am always looking for good stuff! Should I read Maniac Mcgee? Why or why not? Tell me something about the setting, something about the characters, and a few things about the story without giving it all away.
Hey, I hear you all are reading Yes We Can by Garen Thomas. I have wanted 8th graders to read about Obama for the past two years, since I read his book Dreams of My Father. I have to give Mr. Patner his props for making this happen! He wanted me to hook you up with a link that has been going around the Internet. Check this out:
Look at the first 16 slides.
What kinds of connections can you make between the first 16 slides and what you have already read. If you haven’t read as far as the pictures represent, what do the pictures tell you about what is to come?
For the blog discussion please make comments about at least 5 connections you can make between your reading and the first 16 slides of the scrapbook. You can also consider any connections, similarities or differences you have with Mr. Obama as a child. Based on the pictures, what is your opinion about his experiences. Post your ideas.
Happy blogging!
Spencer Math and Science Academy has become Spencer Technology Academy thanks to a multi-million dollar grant through Chicago Public Schools and the initiative of our principal Mr. Jackson and our dedicated teachers and staff! Beginning this year 15 classrooms have been designated as 21st century classrooms and received LCD projectors, and “clicker” systems. The school now has 2 rolling laptop labs, numerous digital cameras, video cameras, and other outstanding state of the art technology. There will be a new parent room equipped with the latest in technology. Our “Cornerstone” project is an after school program that will offer experiences with multimedia for interested and motivated students in the areas of music production, graphic arts, and video production.

Spencer students throughout the school will have opportunities for digital experiences that will take them out of the four walls of the classroom and beyond the immediate. So what happened to Spencer Math and Science Academy? It has moved into the 21st century!
